Women Can’t Jump V.2: SHORT
(UPDATE: For the full video, please visit msnbc.com -- msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/35320777#35320777)
This short is a snapshot of what I've been up to lately: Reporting, filming and producing a story about Lindsey Van, the first female world champion in ski jumping, and her fight to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in an event that has never been open to women athletes.
As of 2009, ski jumping remains the last sport in the Summer and Winter Olympics restricted to men only. Ski jumping shared the distinction with women's boxing until August of last year, when the International Olympic Committee made the historic decision to include female boxers in the program for the 2012 London Games.
About this video:
The video footage is courtesy of Jessica Jerome and her GoPro helmet video camera. In it, she is ski jumping in Utah with fellow U.S. ski jumper Billy Demong on Nov. 19, 2009 (for her version: youtube.com/watch?v=ZN1A3xxk_rk).
What you hear -- in addition to the brilliant music by Doran Danoff -- are audio excerpts from interviews conducted with American jumpers, the leaders of Women Ski Jumping USA, a non profit, and a member of the International Olympic Committee.
Jerome's footage will be a part of my master's project.
