6th Sunday of Easter - May 1, 2016
"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you." ~ Jn 14:26
In our first reading we hear the Apostles give us a new "rule" to live by - sounds like old times to me. But our Christ tells us something we forget in our daily lives - to rely on the Holy Spirit and refocus our thoughts on the Christ, not our own inner struggles of light and dark. In a sense, Jesus is reminding us that we are human and we are going to stray - and the way back is through the Holy Spirit. How difficult is it? Very. We struggle with returning to the teachings of the Christ in everything we do. We sit in front of the television yelling and screaming at would-be presidents and their sycophants. We call them names and spread viciousness about them to all who will listen - forgetting the most important rule of all: Love One Another. We get caught up in our human frenzy and allow ourselves to succumb to the darkness. The evil one is NOT defeated and rendered null. It wins because we forget the teachings of the very being we profess to follow: Jesus, the Christ.
He's about to ascend to the Father - to the Creator God. Perhaps we should raise our spirits and souls with +Him and return to the teachings of love, compassion, and forgiveness - if we can...
