Fuquay Varina Middle School Band 75th Anniversary
TIME WARNER CABLE NEWS WAS ON SITE THURSDAY NIGHT AS THE FUQUAY VARINA MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND CELEBRATED IT'S 75TH ANNIVERSARY. THE BAND PLAYED A PIECE OF MUSIC SPECIFICALLY WRITTEN FOR THE MILESTONE EVENT. TYLER GRANT IS A MUSIC EDUCATION MAJOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA. HE NOT ONLY COMPOSED THE SONG, TITLED EPIC VENTURE, BUT CONDUCTED THE STUDENTS AS WELL. GRANT SAYS HE FOUND INSPIRATION FOR THE MUSICAL SCORE FROM ONE OF THE TOWN'S FOUNDING FATHERS, WILLIAM FUQUAY, WHO IMMIGRATED FROM EUROPE IN THE EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS. "During the 1800s, when he came over, it must have been a very scary time, taking many weeks if not months to get over. There was a lot of excitement on that ship I imagine and also sometimes a little fear, so you hear both sides in the piece." THE 88 MEMBER BAND WAS MADE UP OF 7TH AND 8TH GRADERS AS WELL AS 20 STUDENTS FROM FUQUAY VARINA HIGH SCHOOL. GRANT SAYS DESPITE THEIR YOUTH, THE BAND WAS OUTSTANDING. "It was absolutely amazing. The students have worked so very very hard and have been so welcoming to me. They have put forth a lot of energy and passion in the music they have played and I couldn't be more proud of what they have done in a short amount of time." ORGANIZERS SAYS THE CONCERT COMMEMORATED THE YEARS OF SUPPORT FAMILIES, EDUCATORS AND ADMINISTRATORS HAVE PROVIDED FOR THE ARTS IN FUQUAY VARINA.
